Post Ooops, I bought some stuff
So I had a friend call me last week asking about overclocking his Celeron CPU...So I asked him why not just buy a better processor....then I thought to myself, that's what I'm going to do, so I bought these out of pure impulse

I've yet to find a reason to upgrade my X79/3930k...

I'm holding out for Broadwell-E or whatever it may be.

agreed. not much of an upgrade from the 3930k. but the 3930k was a nice upgrade to my hackintosh running an i7 920.

I have to say, the sabertooth x99 is quite the evolution over the x79 though. it's a beefy (and heavy) sob

Yeah, the X99 motherboards definitely are leaps ahead of the X79 ones, though the Z170's are even better.

I'm almost thinking I'll move back to the "consumer" line next go around since that seems to get all the latest and greatest I/O upgrades. The "enthusiast" platform always seems to be at least 1 generation behind.

Post Re: Ooops, I bought some stuff
well the X79 and X99 chipsets are technically aimed more at high end workstations no? where server like reliability is more important than the latest io features. Even the X79 had all the I/O I needed though so I'm not too bothered by a few things being a little behind the consumer market personally.

I do have one minor gripe with the X99 Sabertooth board and that's the lack of an eSata port. I find that frustrating because I went out of my way for an eSata dock. I realize there's a ton of USB 3.1 ports which on paper are technically faster, but usb3 is shared and it's usb, but I find in reality I still have better performance with eSata.

I was thinking more along the lines of M.2 SSD's (or whatever the next interface will be).

the Sabertooth X99 has an M.2 slot. I was thinking of buying an SSD for it to replace my 2x128gb Samsung 850 pro's after the RAID crapped out twice on me. it's been stable since the last repair though so I'm going to forego that upgrade for now since heat seems to be an issue with a few of the higher end (capacity) M.2 models I was reading reviews on. Besides, I remodelled my living space during the holidays so I'd rather focus on getting a new mini fridge that doesn't stand out so much, and probably a new chair since my 10yr old zellers special is really starting to fall apart.

on the topic of chairs though, these look fancy

Post Re: Ooops, I bought some stuff
So sorry I missed this thread. I have the ASUS Sabertooth Z97 Mark II board, but looking to upgrade to a board that has the M.2 slot. I have an itch to go faster than my current RAID 0.

I've been thinking about an M.2 SSD as well. This board has a slot for it, but my concern from looking at reviews is that it seems some of the higher end M.2 SSD's have heat issues. Being as the slot on my board has a cover that goes over it, I'm not sure how I feel about that

I was looking at the board you got and I was wondering where the M.2 slot was. I like them out in the open. I don't want to go to the Skylake platform just yet. I still want to get the most out of my i7 4790K, hence the question in the motherboard section for looking for a Z97 board w/M.2 slot.

just start by buying one of these maybe?

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_ ... _id=089992

Then you'll be forced to buy a board, and at that point, any board will do :)
