Post Streaming Media boxes
Who here has one? I have seen some ads for the ROKU 2 and then there is the Apple TV ...

I am leaning towards the ROKU 2 ...

Anyone care to comment?

I have a full desktop PC connected running MediaPortal, that's the only way to do it! (or XBMC)

Seriously, buy an Atom/ION or an AMD Fusion, a nice little Lian-Li/Silverstone ITX/mATX case and you're good to go :)

Seriously? The ROKU 2 is only $99!! To build a HTPC, it would cost about $350~$400 dollars.
Granted that an HTPC would be nice to build but I just wanted something that plugs into my Onkyo/55" LED LCD TV/Home theater system.
Nothing more ... :geek:

I'm just thinking you'll end up having more issues with those boxes than a cheap PC, but perhaps they've matured more now.

Post Re: Streaming Media boxes
I've looked into what the streaming boxes offer and the channel lineups are way more profuse than what used to be there just a year ago. Though I have a crappy DSL line, I expect it to go up to 4GB up/down in about a couple months, which will help in streaming media to my big screen TV. I have a dedicated Ethernet cable from my router/switch from upstairs down to the TV center and the streaming media box will plug in and then via HDMI straight to my Onkyo. No mess, no fuss. Plus the ROKU has a very easy to use remote control, though I hope to get it to work through my Logitech Harmony remote ... :handgestures-thumbup:

not going to lie, but i've been tempted to buy a little WD live box to try since they're cheap. my neighbor has one, though i only got to play with it for a few minutes, they look kind of neat. for 80$ i think it would be worth trying

Yeah, the streaming media boxes have come down and the ROKU 2 is $99 ($98 from Amazon ... )
I am just waiting on my phone company to upgrade the DSL up/download speeds to 4Mbps at the end of October. Apparently the ROKU 2 needs at least a minimum of 1.2Mbps (mid-level DSL) or better to stream media without buffering. For HD or 1080p streams, they recommend at least 5Mbps Can't quite do that with what I have right now. Crappy DSL is marginal at 1.03Mbps download ... :(

But our local AP&T phone company said I'm first on the list to get upgraded ... it's because I'm so special ...

actually the cheaper roku would do the trick, $99 only allows to play games.
