Post I require your assistance!!
When it comes to a HTPC, my setup consists of a raspberry pi (xmbc) with an external HDD via USB 2.0 and streaming from my PC via powerline network. Unfortunately my pi decided to go to the heavens of electronic waste. Overclocking and overvolting might have played a role in the death. I need something with a bit more horsepower that doesn't cost an arm, but still has to be power efficient. For now I need it to stream via external drive with the option of streaming via network down the road whenever I get a NAS configured. What are my options guys? XMBC will be my front end.

I looked into getting either an OUYA or a NUC, or even an apu based system of craigslist or ebay. <$200 is my budget. I really like the intel nuc. the celeron should be sufficient i think .

Might i recommend a Chromecast with Plex. I love my Chromecast (but I don't use Plex). You're welcome to come over some time and check it out, we still need to grab sushi anyway.

The only thing I dislike about the Chromecast is that it only has 2.4GHz single-stream WiFi. There's a lot of times where the video quality just isn't 100% and I'm pretty certain it's due to the WiFi connection. I don't think it's my router either (ASUS RT-AC66U). It's just that my TV is flanked by cabinets on either side, plus all the various interference I'm sure the TV emits, it doesn't make for an ideal WiFi area.

You'll also kind of need Plex Pass at the moment as the server version has fixes for Chromecast. It's not in the public (free) release yet, probably a couple more months. It mostly fixes issues with 5.1 audio.

I think the Roku Streaming Stick may be a better option. It's still rather cheap but at least it runs dual-band WiFi and has a dedicated remote too, so anyone visiting your place can use it.

WiFi will be an issue as currently I have a RT-N16 running tomato on the single 2.4GHz . Being that the farthest I'm from my neighbors is only approx. 10 feet between houses, it's congested like hell. Performance does suffer and I doubt streaming 720 or 1080 will have smooth playback. Investing in 5GHz will be another task I guess. Just a fyi, besides amazon prime and youtube, everything i have is locally stored.

Anyone visiting your place can control your Chromecast too, anyone who's phone is on your wifi has control of the Chromecast. My friends do it all the time.

Also, you're probably correct about the wifi. have you tried using an extension cable to move the chromecast away from the TV?

My WiFi password is extremely complex and not something easily entered, so I don't bother giving it to guests :P

what about one of these?

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.as ... -_-Product

2gb stick of ram would run about 20-25$ and then if you're streaming anyway, just use any old hard drive or usb stick to run XBMCBuntu or OpenELEC on it

I've honestly been curious about some of the zbox's, might be more of a gimmick than anything, but they look cute
