Post LED/LCD or Plasma?
The age old question that never seems to get answered.

Help me out here. I'm shopping and for some reason I'm looking at Plasmas and dont know why. They really spook me.
I'm looking for something in no less than 65". Leaning towards LED though. But now I read where you have your backlit and edge lit LEDs. I need to educate myself more.

we have several Samsung LED Smart TV at work, and they're beautiful. having said that, in general if you're gonna use it for even a bit of gaming, avoid plasma. Plasma is otherwise has the best black level. LED has the least realistic color presentation. LCD and Plasma are both great at color. LCD will give it a more crisp sharp image and less pixely in fast motion scenes. there really isn't THE BEST choice between the three, if there were none of the the other two technology would exist. it all depends on what your needs are.

personally, i use my TV for some gaming, and mostly movie watching, i would go with a Samsung Smart LED.

Mainly for watching TV and Blurays. And the occasional Wii and Xbox 360 which is rarely ever. Maybe once or twice a year.
I just need (want) the best pic for viewing movies and sports.

Shopping for a "main" TV is very exhausting. Much more so than any PC HW. I have spent more than a week reading reviews, studying specs, picture calibrations, prices etc trying to get the best bang for the buck. Flipping back and forth between Plasma and LED. Edgelit vs backlit. If that even means shit. Stupid and sometimes meaningless refresh rates. This and that.

I think I have narrowed it down to maybe 3.
Only the Samsung comes with 2 pair 3D glasses which are expensive compared to Passive 3D glasses.
Also the fact that I wil rarely use the 3D. only the wife and daughter will.
LG has a Passive 65" but I just had that brand.

Panasonic's TC-P65ST50--If I'm not too skeered to go Plasma

Or go out on a limb.

i wouldn't worry about 3d, it's dying. i work in the VFX industry, and everyone is jumping ship on the 3d conversion scene.

regardless of edge lit or backlit, what's more important is look for one with "local dimmin" capability, also known as micro dimming. you can read up more about that. but basically it'll eliminate the dredded backlight bleed effect that plagues all LCD screens. the better the micro dimming, the less of a backlight bleeding (also known as flash light effect) you'll notice. there're many different level and quality of micro dimming, higher end models will do a better job than lower end models.

if i were to shop for a LED/LCD screen today, i would look for the best micro dimming capability model and go from there. backlight bleed is one of those things i dredd the most about LCD screens, although Plasma has it too, just not as bad.

3D is not my idea. But an order. :(

However I have not found a TV of that size with local dimming less than $3,000
my budget is no more than $2500 maybe 2700

Post Re: LED/LCD or Plasma?
LG bought my 65" back. Full refund. And they contacted me via the repairman who came and looked at it. I didn't have to call them. Very good customer service.

The repairman came by and looked at it, I wasnt here but the wife said he mentioned the fact that since it was a vertical line and not horizontal that he would have to order the part which would take weeks. My guess is that he thought I should have LG replace or refund the cost. Because I never called LG. I waited about 2 weeks and got a call as well as an email from LG about refunding my money. They emailed me the letter, the shipping label, and another form to tape to the TV. They also sent me a large box to ship it at no cost. plus they paid for the shipping. They never mentioned an option such as sending me another model 65". They just stated they had no more 65Lw6500's so they were refunding me. So what does it sound like? A random issue with my model? LG really has no more of that model in their warehouse? In either case, Im happy

it's a low cost flat panel brand caters to the budget minded crowd. nothing wrong with it if budget and size is priority. color, quality, viewing angele, and all else definitely suffers tho.

they've been around for quite a few years now.

It had quite a wide and glossy bezel around it which appeared warped in several places. Seemed cheaply made as far as the plastic parts. picture was pretty good. But it has a high gloss screen. And no I'm not in the market.

I bought a 47" Vizio from Sears 4 years ago and it's still doing great. MOF ... the Boss and I are going to look at the 55" Vizio at Sam's this weekend in Fairbanks. If we get it, then the 47" goes upstairs in the Computer Cabin and the 55" goes on the wall in the living room ... :handgestures-thumbup:

Why not get 10 more inches? The m3d651sv is only 1798.00 vs the m3d650sv which is about 50 bucks less. 240. Vs 120
I'm considering the sharp lc70le847u. Their top 70".

BIG TIME UPDATE!!!!

Our 47" Vizio just died. We're looking at this plasma http://www.crutchfield.com/p_30560P8500/Samsung-PN60F8500.html from Crutchfield. FREE SHIPPING to Alaska!!!

Plasma is the way to go for cinema in a dark room. Apparently this plasma has the best screen because it actually absorbs light instead of reflecting it back!.

GET THE F8500. it's the best plasma screen available now. and it's the only plasma that gets as bright as a typical LCD up to 200lum.

just watch out for burn in.
