Possible RMA for the ole ASUS ROG Rampage III Extreme
Yup ... after a few weeks of SSD goodness with my Marvel 9123 SATA 6G controller onboard the ROG R3E, it looks like it just decided to shit its pants and go away!! It no longer recognizes my Crucial C300 64GB SSD ... Bwwaaaa! :angry-cussingblack:

And to make matters worse ... it's not letting me see it, even in Windows either. :x

So, I've just initiated the painful process of RMAing the board through ASUS ... I hope it's not a long, drawn out affair ... I've never had any problems with ASUS boards ... but this is my first time though, so I hope it goes okay. At least I was smart enough to register the product with ASUS's VIP membership. Though what good it will do, I haven't a friggin' clue. The serial number came up in the box on the RMA form, I guess that's it ... LOL!!

are you sure it's not the SSD?

those SSDs tend to die prematurely these days.

Nope ... it's definitely not the SSD. I took it off the SATA 6G controller and put it on the ICH10R and it shows up clear as a bell. I even re-installed the OS on it, using the Intel ICH10R controller (in AHCI mode) and it was "simply mahvelous!"

No ... unfortunately, it's the Marvell 9123 controller. There's been a lot of discussion as to the "crappiness" of this controller over on eXtreme Systems forums (me included ;) .) I never used it when I first got the board (Apr '10) because I never had anything that used the SATA6G ports. Then I got that Crucial C300 6G SSD and it was great!! Then today, it wasn't there. I've had the rig off for about a week or so, and when I fired her up today ... just to have a little fun, the SSD wasn't there because I could not boot up. It's like the controller doesn't even exist because nothing I hook up to it is recognized in the BIOS ... very maddening I say!

UPDATE:

Today was a very, very good newsday! I had initiated the RMA process yesterday, and late last night, I received the incident case number. I promptly called ASUS, (located in Fremont CA) and to my surprise, I got a hold of the only wide-eyed guy there, goes by the name of Mark!! He noticed I was qualified for the VIP membership and that means ... I get a spanking, brand-new motherboard, cross-shipped to me after they receive my cursory CC info. Woo Hoo! He, the ASUS man, also told me that the newest revision of the R3E, has the new, improved Marvell controller chip and that I, hopefully  , will not have a problem with it. But nonetheless, the RMA process with ASUS has not been the nightmare I thought it would be. :handgestures-thumbup:

I got it automatically when I purchased the R3E motherboard. One of the perks when buying a $400 motherboard, I suppose ...

so let me just get this straight. it's the chipset that's faulty, not the CPU? because that's what it seems.

Come on Howard ... geez. I know when a chipset goes south ... it's definitely NOT my i7 965EE. That baby is bullet-proof. It's the crappy Marvel 9123 controller along with the immature drivers. Even with the latest drivers, the silicone that was used on that early chip has proven to be flaky. Even ASUS support acknowledges it. They sure wouldn't have already sent me a new motherboard if they didn't agree with me.

Already have my old motherboard out of the Silverstone FT02-BW and just waiting on the new one to arrive ... :handgestures-thumbup:
