Post Trying to figure this board out...
So i bought a new board, cpu, gpu, RAM, and case and i installed everything. I still have my old hdd's that i installed as well. So i get into the BIOS and it has detected my cpu and RAM and gpu correctly so that's all good. My problem is that when i try to start it normally it says windows failed to start and that a recent hardware or software change may have cause the problem. I tried running the start up repair but it won't even let me do that. I think the board is still hanging on to the old mobo or soemthing like that. I'm not sure what to do. Is there anything i was supposed to do preinstall or something i can do now to fix this? Thanks :)

make sure the memory timing setting in your BIOS is set to exactly the spec of your memory.

so look on your memory sticks, it should say something like 9-9-9-24 or something like that. and go into BIOS, and change the memory timing settings to exactly that, and make sure the voltage setting also matches to the spec too. that's the most common issue for new builds.

Ok i just double checked and all my memory timings are set exactly as they are stated too, besides the tRAS, it's supposed to be 24 but it only lets me choose Auto for it. the other settings are all at 9. I'm still getting the same problem. It won't let me boot into windows. it still says taht it failed to load due to hardware or software changes and it recommends to use the startup repair tool but it can't even execute that because of the failing to load.

I would update the BIOS, load setup defaults, then install Windows. Play with the settings once Windows is up and running.

I agree with that procedure but the thing is this is a pre-installed version of windows bought from a store. I don't have the windows disc because of this unfortunately. I really wish the big companies would give the windows install disc with the pre-built machines they sell. It would make life a lot easier at times.

Nowadays they don't provide a disk because they just separate out a small partition of the drive with the restore software installed on that. Have you checked to see if this is the case? You may not need a disk to restore at all.

Yeah I know. I have a recovery drive, D:, but the thing is i can't even access that. It shows the BIOS screen and then says the whole indows failed because a HW/SW change. So it gives me the option to use the repair tool or start normally. If i use the tool it fails again because a device is inaccessible. If i choose start normally it'll show the windows loading screen for a split second and the ngives me a BSOD and starts the process over again.

Sounds to me like your trying to use an old Windows install from a previous system, after basically building a completely new system.I hate to be the one to say it but you are not going to be able to restore Windows to the new system because it is locked to the old system.Without a proper Windows Cd to do a reformat and install, your only real options are to buy a new copy of windows or to start using linux if you can't afford it.

slumpy made a good point. if you're trying to install an old HDD with an OS into a new build, due to the new hardware configuration, you'll have to reinstall windows on the HDD, or repair install. other wise, you won't be able to boot into windows.

Yeah figured this out the hard way.... how could I have made a mistake like that? Well oh well.... it won't happen again that's for sure. I do not like linux at all..... that's what I'm stuck on for now though. I'm just gonna move personal files to my extra hard drive then buy a new hard rive and a new copy of windows then install to that and yeah... should be ok then. I have a question though.... I have my 500Gb hdd and it has my personal files and stuff like that on it. Can I install windows on that one no problem or is it going to give me grief because it's not a bare drive?

once you get a copy of windows, it'll recognize an existing copy of windows, you can either install a new copy on top of it, or do a repair install, which will only replace the system files. whatever you do, DO NOT reformat the drive during the installation. reformatting will erase all your data.

So I'm just going to cough up some extra money for the disc at this point. Ubuntu won't run any of my stuff even while using Wine so it's not good news. Anyway..... Will this work for me? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=230566126857#vi-content I have 32 bit home premium and I wasn't sure if the upgrade disc is what I need for it to install over the old version or not. Thanks for your help guys.

P.S. if you could let me know as soon as possible that'd be great. :) I have some work I can't get done that needs to get done ;)

Better to buy a full version, otherwise you need to do some trickery to get a clean install. Without trickery, then you need to have Vista (maybe XP) installed before hand.

Could one of you guys maybe look for a full windows vista home premium 32 bit for me? I'm kind of pressed for internet time because i can't connect to the internet anymore. I'm using someone else's computer right now :p
