Hmm I've never had any issues...

Install XP would be very difficult from USB, but Ubuntu/Linux and Windows 7 are simple.

For Linux, I've used: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal- ... -as-1-2-3/ with success.
For Windows 7: http://www.winsupersite.com/article/win ... memory-key

Post Re: Installing OS via USB
you came to mind when i was having these issues...i knew you'd be the first to post...my first problem was i was getting this error on boot: "unknown keyword in configuration file" I did a search, and found a work around where i modified the config file, then i was able to get to the install menu, but if i made any selections, i get a dialog box that says "casper/vmlinuz" with an OK button, you click OK and nothing happens, i'm pretty sure it has something to do with the kernel installer, but i don't understand why i can't use GRUB to boot, the guide i used calls for syslinux, and i'm not even sure what that is...i'm still a linux noob after 2 years!! thanks for the links, i'll read through them...

where's st.louis? wasn't he a linux geek as well?

I would have liked to do XP since the license is on the bottom of the netbook, so i created an image of my windows xp cd in Linux, but i hit a dead end trying to boot it...

turns out XP is a fail, and Ubuntu 11.10 doesn't work with this particular netbook, primarily, the graphics hardware...used an older version, so far so good, but really wishing i could install XP, it's the wife's and she's very DOS based...

Yeah, to properly install XP from a USB drive...it's just not worth it.

I'd say pickup an external DVD drive instead. Should be able to find one for like $20-30 (on sale). Then installing XP will be a breeze!
