Post Meet Micro-tosh
i finally got my new 15" Macbook Pro today, it's a intel i5 2.4Ghz w/ 4GB ram, and Nvidia GT 330M.. that's right,, never thought i would stray to the dark side.

but all this was to turn it into a fully functional PC laptop. so i swaped out the original HDD and installed a new Samsung MP4 640GB 7200 RPM drive that averages 90~100MB/S on read/write.

so far i've installed OSX and allocated 100GB of space for OSX, and made room for 500GB of space for Windws 7. just finished installed windows and now in the process of installing all my programs. so far everything seems to work, very well.. just as a PC should, but can't believe the build quality of this thing. it's simply amazing. sure i paid a premium for it, but i think the quality i get in return is worth it.

i'll post some benches and screenies when i finish with everything tomorrow. so far so good.

finally a PC laptop that doesn't look like a butt hole.

Here's a pic
Image

the trackpad also works like a pc, you can tap it. and most important of all, right click works by either tap with two fingers, or click the bottom right corner of the track pad.

i am still in the process of testing it. so far i found out that the bootcamp driver for the nvidia 330m is rather old, and crashes on some games. although know how steve jobs is insecure about his property, Nvidia does not have permission to allow forceware driver to be installed onto the mac without apple's authorization. so i found a website called laptop2driver or some sort,, kind of like Omega driver but more up to date. and was able to install latest version of forceware, now all games run fine without crashing. i average about 32fps on games like bad company 2 in medium settings, and 45 fps in L4D 2 on High settings.

another thing is, the thermal solution seems to be rather poor running in win7. i think it has to do with apple's EFI VS PC's Bios difference. i find the fans in win7 don't kick in til temps reach 100C on the cpu. so i went and found a neat little program that was able to communicate with EFI SMC that allows you to control the fan speed according to CPU temp. so now it spools up accordingly and CPU never exceeds 80C, and GPU never exceed 70C while playing games.

i'll keep on doing more testing, and post back for more results. let this thread be for those who are interested in turning a MBP into a fully functional PC laptop.

Gives me more reason to obtain one through the Boss's work. She works for the local school district which utilizes Macs and Apples exclusively. I can get one with little down and low monthly payments. She wouldn't let me touch her 24" iMac and her 13" MacBook Pro is too small for my tastes. Looks great! Excellent post Howard! :handgestures-thumbup:

one thing i also noticed was Apple's standard for their laptop size is actually bigger than HP's. i think HP measured by the size of the outer casing, but i think apple does it by the viewable screen area. so my old HP laptop claimed it's 15.4 inch, but actual viewing area is only about 14, while this macbook pro is also 15.4, the viewable area is actually 15.4, so the overall package is also slightly bigger. just something i noticed.

Howard, I noticed on your screenie pic, that your shortcuts are arranged on the bottom. Do you use StarDock for Windows? Or did you just arrange them using the windows desktop?

i just dragged the icons one by one to the bottom. has always worked fine for me personally for the past. it's just how i like to arrange things. i don't use stardock anymore, haven't used that program for years. i found out that it tend to create more problems than benefits.

that's the thing. it's legal to backup 1 copy of what you own, however, the software that enables you to copy is illegal. it's a real grey area.
