Post Spec me a PC.
Yes, I am looking into building a PC. Apple has really dealt me a blow today after reading this. I was going to sell my Mac Pro and buy one of those iMacs. But since I have no intentions of doing that anymore it's time to go back to a PC. -Shrug-

So here's the task I have for all my friends here. Spec me out a PC that is equivalently specced and priced to the iMac I was planning on buying.

Here are the details of the iMac.

• 27" IPS display (I already have the one I want chosen and it will be listed below).
• 3.4Ghz i7 Sandy Bridge
• AMD Mobility 6970
• 4GB ram
• 1TB HDD
• And costs a total of $2300

Things I already own and wont need to buy.

• OS, I already have a copy of WIndows 7.
• Hard Drives, I plan to repurpose the ones in my Mac Pro, including my SSD.
• A mouse (does not include keyboard).

Here are the only two requirements I have.

• Dell U2711 IPS display because it uses the exact same LG panel as the iMac (and it's beautiful). This alone cost $999.
• Obsidian Series® 650D Mid-Tower Case.

The computer will have three purposes. Most importantly Web Design, secondly photography and finally gaming.

You guys think you can figure something out for me?

i vouch for a 1TB 7200RPM Samsung Spinpoint F3 drive.

that really sucks about the iMac, hopefully public scrutiny will make Apple revise their new iMac with a new firmware update to unlock this. one of the reasons more and more people are starting to make the adoption to Macbooks or Macs are the fact that you can now run windows on them, and also upgrade none apple proprietary components.

Apple is just following Microsoft with this hardware change, you can only buy a harddrive from MS if you want to upgrade your Xbox

That's correct, because the XBOX isn't a pro device. And the Mac is now becoming even less of a pro device than it was (which already wasn't much).

ASUS P8Z68-V PRO
Intel Core i7 2600K
HD6970 or GTX570
2x4GB DDR3-1333 or 1600
Corsair HX750

No harm in giving the new Z68 a go, but you can probably get the P8P67 B3 PRO for less. Up to you.

And the U2711 definitely isn't $999. Wait for a sale. I got mine for $750CAD.

Sweet! Was Dell running the sell or did you buy it from another dealer?

Direct from Dell. It was on sale, plus I had a coupon from the email flyer for another 10 or 15% off if I recall.

And well it's always that price at a Canadian re-seller: http://www.bestdirect.ca/products/23047 ... 0Computer/ though that doesn't do you much good ;)

Someone else recommended the ASUS SABERTOOTH P67. Any real big differences?

Other than a different sticker, I'm guessing no.

HD6950 might be alright too if you aren't doing any heavy gaming.

Other than the motherboard being entirely covered, I don't think so.

I guess the only thing it lacks is the onboard Bluetooth which allows you to manage some UEFI settings for OC'ing from your phone I believe. I think the Sabertooth costs a bit more too.
