Post my upgrade is now official
I just ordered a 2600k. I know i know, its not top of the line. But i've been planning on upgrading soon so I can run OSX and windows on my second system, and the i7 is really overkill for what it will be doing most of the time.

i'm still undecided as to what board to buy, i've had my eye on an asus p8z68 series board though. unless there's another suggestion?

If you're going to be running osx might as well get a Gigabyte motherboard. They work best for tonymac's osx solution.

not necessarily. but there was a gigabyte board i was looking at. i forget which though.

i like the p8z68 deluxe though because i know the usb controller onboard is workable in osx, which is kind of a must. the rest of the onboard hardware will work as well. if anyone can get a hackintosh going these days, twill be me

^ your funny. what am I going to do with 2x 680's. it's bad enough that my pair of 460's is extremely under-utilized, and I mean extremely. I haven't even rendered a video lately, let alone play any games. Running Aero is the most work my video cards have done in months. But soon they'll be running Quartz Extreme

got my board the other day, still waiting on ram, so i'm stuck with 2gb at the moment.

Sad this is, this i7 with 2gb of ram is faster than my core 2 quad with 8gb at work now even when running multiple VM's on top of my usual workload.

i'm still waiting for a 16gb kit to show up, im only going to install 8gb, but i figured for the price difference of the 16gb kit i can have a spare set on the shelf.

got her finished finally, with OSX Lion running 100%, my new production system is quite nice. It took me a while to get the display working 100% since i had to hexedit the driver for it to pick up the correct inputs on the new videocard and iron out a few kinks, but she's working beautifully now, just needs a 240gb SSD

Specs:
i7 2600k
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe Gen3
8 GB Corsair XM3
Asus Radeon 6870

and some other typical stuff. I'm looking at an agility 3 24gb SSD for it tohugh to replace the 250gb laptop drive im running it off of. I've got a couple of agility 3's running mac os in my other mini tower and macbook and i'm quite happy with the performance of them for the price.
