Post Computer Randomly Shuts off.
And I can't fucking figure out why. And I'm not talking like it just goes lights out. It basically waits to close all programs and then finally goes through the "Shutting down" screen before turning off. But I never told it to. It's basically doing this once a day now for god knows what reason. My temps go as high as high 70C on the VC and 48C on the CPU, so I highly doubt it's temps. I also don't recall doing any updates but those usually let you know ahead of time.

Any ideas?

Geez.

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45
C2Q 9550
Radeon 5870
4 gigs of G.skill DDR2 1066
780 watt OCZ mod extreme

I actually just checked the even viewer and came up with this.

"The kernel power manager has initiated a shutdown transition."

I just followed the last step on that site and hopefully it will stop. If not, who knows, maybe I'll do a clean install and clean my case out (there may be dust building and heating issues I'm not aware of).

Still does it, no reason given.

The process C:\Windows\system32\winlogon.exe (PAUL-PC) has initiated the power off of computer PAUL-PC on behalf of user Paul-PC\Paul for the following reason: No title for this reason could be found
Reason Code: 0x500ff
Shutdown Type: power off

Some sort of virus or malware? Seems like "you" are shutting down the PC...

So I'm pretty sure I just figured out my problem (while two different antivirus are running in the background and my windows 7 CD is ready to do a repair). What did I learn from all this? Keep it simple stupid.

*edit*

Talk about a fucking mission, I just finished cleaning this crap. When I took the fan off for the CPU cooler, there was I shit you not about a quarter inch thick very dense almost carpet like pile of dust. I had to use a credit card to scrape that shit off. Hopefully this solved my problem,. Oh and my temps dropped 10-15C, so that's not too shabby.

Holy shit...I've opened 5 year old computers than had less dust. Get that tower up off the floor! If it wasn't on the floor I think you have a bit of house cleaning to do.

I haven't cleaned it for 3 years and it's been running 24/7. And yes it was on the floor.

I just went through two, but I had to first scrape the dust off before I could actually use those.

I mean like on a weekly or monthly basis. That way you won't have to use a scraper later. ;)

We all get cocky once in a while, not to mention I haven't really made any upgrades since I got my 5870. I don't really see any reason to.

Speaking of dusty computers.....just where does that shit come from anyways? Does it lurk hidden in your home somewhere? Because no matter how clean you keep your house it gets in there somehow. I have to blow mine out seems like every few days and its sitting off the floor. Some sneaky shit that dust.

The computer itself is a dust magnet, due to the static electricity it generates. Plus sitting on the floor is where the dust settles and the fans just suck it up!! Some type of screen/filter is better than nothing over the openings.

FUCK!!!!!!

The attempt by user Paul-PC\Paul to restart/shutdown computer PAUL-PC failed

Back to the drawing board. I think a backup/format is in order.

edit

Well judging by the patterns, the computer always resets itself after a recent reset. Basically 2 days nothing, then shut down, then another right after it's fully booted into windows. There's obviously no hardware issues considering it goes into a proper shut down rather than an emergency one. I'm going to run Linux for a while and see if it happens, but I'm pretty sure it's a windows issue, whether it's an actual windows issue or some form of virus, I don't know, but I'm betting it's definitely something with windows.

*edit*

So linux has asked me to shut down twice so far (I've just done a recent upgrade, but already restarted). So far I've denied both. Let's see what happens. Apparently my PSU could also be bad, from the things I've read. Really don't feel like buying a new PSU.

Well, it's build-your-own-PC month at Microcenter.

Or have you considered. ;)

So I've been suspicious about this today and it turns out I was right. The issue is not with my PC, but with my power switch. I turned the PC off and about an hour later it just booted itself up. No clue how to fucking fix it yet.

The case power switch? Maybe there's some dust lodged between the button and the switch?

If you have a reset switch, you could disconnect the power switch and plug the reset switch into the power switch spot on the motherboard. Not the best solution but the easiest.

Pretty sure the problem's fixed now. Hardware issues can be such a pain in the ass, even if it's just a stupid little button.

You don't want to hear it but considering 3 years + the fact that I'm a pretty clean person, the majority of the shit you see in those pictures is dead skin cells.
