Post Ipad or Ipad Mini
My grand-daughters 5th birthday is tomorrow and Im trying to decide on which is a more feasible purchase. The mini seems to be a perfect size for her. She's been playing with our Ipad and she knows more about Apple SW than I do but it seems too big for her. and keeping her out of the Apple store is a feat in itself. -.-
So would a mini do everything a standard Ipad do but just smaller? Or should I pay the extra.
Help me out you Apple know-it-alls. 8-)

For a 5-year-old I suspect the mini might be easier for her to handle. Also it's a little cheaper.

True dat. But you know this day and age its all about electronics for these kids. Hmmph.....I played outside all my childhood years on my bike..playing cowboys and indians....riding dirtbikes...shooting pellet guns and bb guns. I only came in to shit.

Even though I'm still young too, I can't help but frown upon all these parents when I see their kids playing with iPhones and iPads while they can barely even walk or talk.

Our granddaughter is too sick to play outside long periods of time. Thanks to her mother being and alcoholic and crackhead. So we spend alot of time at the hospital and doctors office. She has to have breathing treatments twice a day with a machine and takes 8 diff. medications a day. She had to have an MRI just 2 days ago. However shes smart. She takes it in stride.

are you taking care of your grand daughter now? because i hear you talk about your grand daughter all the time. where is her mother?

hope you guys have good insurance. our insurance ain't the greatest. recently have to get a medical device custom made for our daughter, nothing serious. but it costs $3800, we have a $3500 deductible. but they said we're in luck cause since we're in network, we get a discount so we'll only have to pay $2100 instead... yay? oh well. can't put a price tag on her health, i guess i'll just have to look at it as buying another LED TV.

Yes we adopted her af birth. Her mom tested positive for drugs and they called us rigt away. We are not out of pocket at all. The state pays for all her doctors visits.....hospital stays and meds. Every cent.
Im still working on her trolling skills on bf3. the non english servers of course. Too much cursing

The fact that she was technically in CPS custody until we legally adopted her makes her eligable for state care. Although we were allowed to take her home with us since we are the biological grand parents.
Their #1goal is to find homes for these children so fhey dont have to care for them. Not that they dont care...its just more "work" for them. So us being the grandparents made it simple. It was like " oh..ok here you go". Then it was only a matter of paperwork and legalizing everything

I'm going to have to disagree with all this talk of "children shouldn't play with tablets". The sooner we can get these things which inspire people to become coders, scientist, engineers, astronauts (the list goes on and on) the better. Think back on what it was that inspired you to be what/who you are today? Having said that I agree they shouldn't ALWAYS be on technology because there are plenty of other things to learn out in the world (it should be a balance), I can't abide by the "children shouldn't play with tablets" mindset.

Thoughts?

Post Re: Ipad or Ipad Mini
i saw something the other day which i found disturbing.

a 3 year old kid picked up a magazine and instead of flipping over the page like you should, the kid poked at it with her index finger and draged it across the page like it was a tablet. needless to say, the page didn't turn.

there's some truth to getting the kids familiar with technology, but not at the expense of general everyday tasks, especially if the kid no longer plays outside, that's sad.

I disagree, the fact that the kids already know to tap and slide is actually an indication of how intuitive that kind of interface is. Kids poke and slides at things all the time even before touch interfaces, it just wasn't until now that we noticed this. 3-years-old is a little old not to be taught how to turn a physical page though.

Post Re: Ipad or Ipad Mini
I think children at such a young age need to learn basic motor skills. They should be learning how to use a pen and paper and writing their name. Once these fundamentals are learned, then proceed to slowly introduce technology. To me, it seems parents throw their kids a tablet or a gaming-device and that's it. Totally hands-off parenting. Even when you do introduce technology to children, I think it needs to be in a controlled manner with some thought into what you are letting them do. It should be some form of enrichment, not just flinging birds.

Perhaps people just act poorly in public. I also get slightly jaded from my mom working in the school board and she tells me of some of the shit kids do these days and the basic things like telling time on an analog clock that they simply do not comprehend. Most of them can barely write a sentence with proper grammar and spelling. Some can barely even handwrite at all. One could argue that these "skills" are no longer needed in our world, but I think those skills help to define more advanced skills. If your brain isn't capable of doing such "simple" tasks, I can't imagine you'll be able to perform complex operations.

I guess the main issue I see, children are FAR too entitled (they have more rights than adults it seems). They expect the world for free and that they can never fail. And when things don't go their way, they bitch and complain that it's everybody else's fault. Even worse when they pull the race card. Whether technology has contributed to this or not, I don't know. There are simply too many variables to factor.

And Comixion, what you said is a growing issue as well. Children need to define reality properly. They need to understand that what happens in video games (typically) should not be done in the real-world. Having them constantly glued to a screen all their lives is going to make that line extremely difficult to draw.
