Post Need opinions on an iMac
I need you who are well versed in apple HW/SW etc for your opinions. I know nothing about em and my daughter has been pestering me for 2 years to get her one but those dam things are expensive. And I dunno why. And I just cant see shelling out so much $$ for a desktop. (unless I'm building it for me)...ahem, anyways check this out and is this a decent price?
Is it too old?

i would just get a refurbished one from apple.com you save tons of money and you also get warranty. i got both my macbook pro and recent 27" cinema display that way. you should look into that.

Do not buy anything with a PowerPC CPU in it. It's a completely dead platform and your daughter will likely kill you for it.

Definitely go with an Intel based one as it'll last you for many years to come. At least it'll run OSX 10.7 (Lion) without issues.

Although personally if I was to buy an AIO desktop, I'd get this: http://www.hp.com/united-states/campaig ... 1X1_nS0kuU

DO NOT!!.. i repeat DO NOT get an HP. and i am not a fanboy of any type. in fact i used to be a huge fan of HP computers, from their desktop to laptops. but their quality have gone down tremendously the past couple years. 9 out of 10 your HP computer will die in a weird death the day the warranty runs up. they have it down to a science. they used to be a great brand, but al the cost cutting and outsourcing, and lack of customer service have turned their product line into turd. ask St Louis, i believe he worked direct/indirectly with HP he can tell you more.

the last time i tried to shop for an HP to replace another HP laptop that died on me, they stiffed me in the rear and tried to make it up by stiffing me again on the rear end. i told them to fuck off and give me my money back, that's when i got a refurbished Macbook pro. my brother in-law's HP, which i picked out for him, also recently died on him, that thing only lasted him two years. STAY FAR AWAY.

lol yes consumer HP's suck, but the business/enterprise grade stuff isn't all that bad which is what the Z1 is. A workstation in-a-box.

If you guys look in my sig, you'll see that I have osx installed on my OCZ SDD. I have been running snow leopard for the past 4 months and recently upgraded to Lion. Build yourself a computer with an i series cpu and a gigabyte motherboard. Google tonymac and use his method. Here is his method. http://tonymacx86.blogspot.com/2010/04/ ... -x-on.html

I've just been running OSX within VMware. It's surely not something I'd want to use daily.

you can build a hackintosh like Dog mentioned. but be prepared for some troubleshooting and lots of time research. since you're retired.. i assume... you might as well take on the project :)

The reason I recommend a Gigabyte motherboard is that with mulibeast it works straight out of the box. Its just a matter of having the .aml motherboard file on the desktop.

hackintosh's take a little time to perfect, depending on the hardware, i have 3 of them, and 1 isnt perfect, but thats more nvidia's fault for not updating their mac drivers, there's a lockup issue with the fermi's
