Post Trying HEVC codec AKA H265
anyone tried the newest H265 HEVC Codec yet?

i just gave it a try last night. while it's still not the 50% space saving as it initially advertise, but at least at this stage of the development, i was able to compress a Blu-ray movie with CRF 18 setting (which is essentially losless quality), while achieving the same final output size as H264 at CRF 20. so essentially, i could get the quality of losless at the size of what used to be CRF 20 for H264. not too bad.

the encoding time easily doubles tho. i think last night it took me around 7 hours to encode Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle at CFR 18 full res 1080P. i just left it on overnight and went to bed and was done by the time i got up.

i've tried playing back the movie and it's not as demanding in resource as i initially thought it would be. i think at the most, it takes up 8~10% of the CPU resource. i think i am going to start encoding my backups in HEVC from now on, since i can take advantage of the space saving while achieving losless quality.

Man, I still remember encoding my home-made 3d renderings in H.263
