Post Custom WinPE 4.0
So with the release of Windows 8, and the fast that I accidently wiped my multiple USB key a couple of months back, I decided to customize a WinPE 4.0 image thats included with the new Windows ADK. To be honest, what really happened was I started by wanting to capture an image of my media center to drop down on a new drive and the updated DISM tool built into Windows 8 now has the imagex capability integrated to merge imaging capabilities, and from there I got completely side tracked.

Some of the bonus' of the new WinPE is the ability to integrate basic .net framework and some other stuff. Unfortunately my scripting skills are pretty limited to batch scripting, and it took me a couple hours to find some good examples online to refresh my memory.

But I came up with the following. I've integrated several tools that would be useful for backing up data from a system, running offline virus scans, windows defender offline for example. Data recovery tools, prime95 for doing load tests as i find it's good for diagnosing heat and power issues. I've also created 2 scripts to automated capturing and restoring an existing system which are not in the menu. I've also integrated scripts to install any version of windows which are not all shown in these screen shots, but any version of XP, vista, 7, 8, server 2008, 2008 r2, and 2012 are all there. I've also included in the boot menu the default recovery environments for 7, 8, server 2008 r2 and 2012.

here's some screenshots anyway

Post Re: Custom WinPE 4.0
So I up and decided to start learning to program in C#, and decided to update my PE image. I did actually start re-writing the menu in PowerShell a while back and did make some progress, but I think this might be a whole lot easier

I've added a clock display on the bottom corner, and also started pulling some system information on the main window. CPU Model, total ram. I plan on adding mounted drive volumes and their size as well. The drive volumes are going to be a little more dynamic so they update when new drive letters come available. At least that's my plan

I also found a library on codeproject to help in mapping network drives so I'm going to use it to add that functionality as well. And I've also downloaded the source for DismGUI so I can utilize it's underlying functionality for installing different versions of windows like I did before, but with a GUI. It will also help in capturing and re-deploying images of a system as well
