Post Windows 8 - Release Preview
Windows 8 RP is now live: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows-8/iso

Looks largely the same as the Consumer Preview, some minor refinements here and there but it still has Aero which is being dropped in the RTM. Things are a bit square-er in this release which aligns with the idea behind Metro.

On my Samsung QX412 laptop with 128GB Samsung SSD, it boots in 8 seconds! Rather amazing IMO. Restart is about 19 seconds, and it skips the POST/BIOS splash. I'm sure with a properly certified Windows 8 desktop/laptop with the necessary Windows 8-compilant UEFI those times would be even less. My laptop does support UEFI boot though, but I don't think that makes it 100% Windows 8 compliant. My desktop on the other hand boots much slower than that, partially due to having a BIOS take a good while and then for it to spin up all my HDDs.

On my U2711 (2560x1440), Metro really sucks though. Although it does scale up reasonably well and doesn't look too pixelated or anything, it still feels like it's too much resolution for it. It feels more at home on my laptop with only 1366x768 (minimum resolution for Metro). I've actually been using my 22" (1680x1050) screen to keep Metro on when using my desktop. It suits it better, plus it lets me keep my desktop always visible on my 27".

Settings sync rather quickly. I change my Metro colour on my laptop and my desktop changes instantly. Same goes for the desktop themes.

Still, it's a big change for Windows. Having the lack of the Start menu and button is really different. It's going to take a while for people to adopt I believe. I still stand by the fact that this would work beautifully on a tablet though, way better than iOS and Android as those are just scaled phone OS's where as this is more of a "proper" OS with actual computing possible.

i like the metro design. however, i think i'll like it more if they kept the Aero. i really don't want to look at the plain old ugly solid window, which really reminds me of windows 3.1 days. and it wasn't pretty.

You are old enough to remember Windows 3.1?

Fall of this year. I'm guessing just before Black Friday?

lol, i remember 3.1 too, that was the first version of windows i used as well

I do like metro, but only for media centers and tablets. not sure much for a desktop OS. my media center will likely be the only system that see's windows 8 for a long time to come. though i'm using windows less and less these days

Post Re: Windows 8 - Release Preview
Got it running by taking my time and installing 7 again first and then upgrading, which is really roundabout but hey, it works.
Would like to know other peoples inpressions so I will post mine first.

what I like:
+ new callender
+ better overview in taskmanager
+ languagebar fastkeys are better
+ alt-tabbing with mouse (somewhat)
+ decent imagemount (for iso's anyway havent tested formats yet)
+ progressbar looks different and shows more details
+ build-in reader (only fullscreen however)

What I don't like:
- the startmenu if I can call it that
- tabletshit
- internet explorer still shows spamhell
- standard mediaplayers still do not support .mkv
- the new startmenu apps like news, weather... do not close after leaving
(can't even find how to do it without taskmanager)

Don't really know yet:
* MSOffice-like bars in the explorer

lets hear what you all think

It's similar to a phone/tablet. They are cached into memory and terminated as required should something more memory intensive come along. This allows it to "instantly" resume when clicked on.

I see absolutely no reason to dislike this. Empty RAM is useless, it should always be full with cached information to reduce load times.

There is, it remains in the way when using alt-tab making it really really long. Which is piontless, if it's not in the taskbar then it shouldn't be there for how I care.
But then again that does not really have anything with not being able to close them. Perhaps they will alter this things later.

Would be nice if they gave the option of traditional startmenu but I know thats not happening. Still seeing if I can get used to it.

ALT+TAB?

I don't use that, I just tile everything across 4 monitors. ALT+TAB takes too long

Hitting Winkey + Q and then typing your app name is fairly effective. I mean, if you're used to clicking through the start menu then Windows 8 sucks, but if you don't mind searching, it works decently well.
