Post so i have a server rack coming....
i bought myself a used server rack with extras. for 300$ it comes with two different 2U chassis', and two 4U's, as well as a rackmount kvm switch, a cisco switch, a monitor and keyboard tray, and lots of extra rails and trays. its also got a power distribution block.

basically the idea is to get rid of some towers, and stack them up, it should make better use of some space, and leave me some room to start organizing since this place looks like a warzone.

i'll get some pictures posted later of what i've brought home so far, just a few chassis', i also fixed a 17" phillips 170S to go in the rack for the kvm

my dd-wrt X86 router will also be going in the rack as well, since its rackmountable to begin with, which is part of why i set it up

its still at the recyclers, he's gonna help me get it here this weekend.

i took some pics of the stuff i do have so far, most of them came out really crappy, and then i ended up having problems with the card reader, i'll see about getting them up soon at least though

Post Re: so i have a server rack coming....
ok, so i have pictures of what i have already

you can see the stack of 4 chassis' here, ignore the cd player on top, lol

Image

can anyone guess what this is? i'm sure avid will know right away

Image

this is kind of an aside. my dual P3 is getting a new board and scsi drive to run my Active directory.

Image

this is my distribution server going into its new home. its going to handle network installs, software packages, maybe wsus as well, not sure. little bit of case modding will be done on here. i have two of these cases, both almost the same, with some differences, i need to get some rear fans in them, dust filters, trim the drive cages a little, nothing too fancy. but they were kind of a more custom system inside them, so a little work needs to be done. the second one of these cases will be my Active directory

Image

Image

my webserver is going to be going in this box. again, little bit of trimming of the fan grills. and better fans. i also managed to bring my OCZ powerstream back to life, its the only psu i had that pulls air straight through front to back

Image

Image

and finally. this is going to be for my file server, this one will actually be getting some new parts over time. i'm planning a 4x 2TB setup, plus an OS drive. i need to cut the case a little for the videocard. otherwise, its just assembly for this one. i may also look into a low profile heatsink for this one, may get one for the webserver as well

Post Re: so i have a server rack coming....
so i started cutting for bracket for the 5 1/4 cages in the 4U cases

Image

Image

and then i did this to my good pants, that'll teach me not to work in my clean clothes........although its not the first time i've done something like that and not learned from it. but they are actually burned a little from the sparks....if i can't bleach it out, it'll be too bad, i'm not buying more pants that i'll hate wearing anyway

Image

so then i decided to put my friend mark to work. its his grinder anyway

Image

Image

i only had to do this to one of them, because this board was a tad larger. but it fits now

Image

and here it is pretty much together, though it still could use some cable management. but there's another hard drive to go in this one first

Image

i may actually cut that atx connector off and solder one on that the extra 4 pins split off of, like we have on newer psu's. i've got a few dead antecs i can scavenge that from. i just hate seeing that big stupid adapter there

That's right, make your friend do all the work. ;)

And meh to bleach. The best thing I found to get grime out of anything is gojo hand cleaner. Smear it in, rub it and wash. I'm serious, it'll work. Plus a little bleach in the wash won't hurt.

Post Re: so i have a server rack coming....
well, i got more done. had a hard time with this first one, this board is picky as hell with ram apparently, that and the combination of bad ram didn't help. but here's my new AD server, its still a dual 1ghz p3 with 2gb ram, but on a new board, running off a scsi hard drive. and its no longer storing data, it will be redirecting that to the file server i'm building

Image

i got the webserver in its new home as well. had to do a little cutting to the case to make the mobo fit. unfortunately that bracket was too narrow to cut the whole i/o port section out and just put in teh backplate that goes with the mobo.

Image

i think i did a pretty good wiring job in this one compared to the others.

Image

and i have these fan's in each server. look at the amps, they push air

Image

and the 3 of them so far on top of the freezer, waiting for the rack to come this weekend.

Image

and this is something that happened when i put a hard drive in the old p3 server to back up the raid so i could move the drives to the new file server. the basement was full of smoke for hours. if you look at the wiring, you'll see the least of the damage. something happened though, not sure what, all i did was shut it down to install a drive, and turn it back on.
