Post New Sun X2200 server
I got a new server the other day from my friend who does the computer recycling. It's a Sun Fire X2200 M2

Paid 250$ for it.

The interesting part is that it was still sealed in its original box. I took a crappy pic with my phone

For the price I've also got a pair of quad cores to drop in it, 2376 HE's I believe, and it currently has 20gb of ram which will likely be fine for my needs.

I think I plan on running vmware ESXi on it to host VM's.

I also got a socket 1366 Xeon 5570 from him to drop in the 1366 mobo I've had kicking around here for a while. The cpu came out of another sun blade that he picked up

Nice find, especially if it's brand new.

Post Re: New server
i pondering dropping a pair of 300-500gb velociraptors in it since i plan to virtualize a few systems in it. just not sure if i should go that route or go solid state drives for the extra cost.

I'll likely stripe the volume for extra speed and backup the system to the file server since i have plenty of space there.

not sure yet, thoughts?

I just picked up 2 Mushkin Chronos 480GB SSD's for $240 a piece at Newegg.ca....can't go wrong at that price IMO.

hmmmm, i was looking at the 250gb velocireptors yesterday at 92$ a piece.

I want to get SSD's for it, but im trying to figure if i really need to spend the extra money for a vmware appliance

Post Re: New server
well, i managed to get a 1mb bios in the sun server in order to install the pair of quad cores for it. the thing had a 512k bios that didn't support the quad cores.

i could have hotswapped it since i have lots of bios chips that i've scavenged from dead mobos that i use here and there for hotswapping boards back to life, but since oracle bought out sun, they locked down the downloads. you can't even download an updated bios without having a support plan which costs thousands per year. I ended up buying on preflashed on ebay. I was skeptical at best about it, but it worked out.

so now i'm looking at storage options. it has two hotswap bay, but the onboard raid controller is an nvidia raid which would be fine if i was running windows, but im not, so the nvidia raid won't work with vmware.

i pondered a pair of velociraptors, but i was looking a the 240gb mushkin SSD's for 175. So now i need to find a decent 2 port raid controller to put in.

my other thought was a 480gb revodrive but i've heard they've got lots of compatibility issues, though it would be nice since i could use the hotswap bays for backup drives where speed isn't a requirement.

i'm still exploring options, but this thing is going to be a monster

I plan on moving my AD server and web server into VM's, as well as setup another vm for WDS and WSUS seperate from the AD server. Reason for that is i'm going to symlink folders on the file server for the WSUS and WDS cache, but in order to do that, the AD has to be accessible as the file server uses ldap.

i'm also considering moving my x86 router to a VM as well, and possibly a VM for network monitoring, pandora FMS maybe? or if i could get a copy of the level platforms service center since i work there and all, that would be nice.

I have the RevoDrive3 X2 480GB. For the most part it works fine, but the drivers do cause the odd BSOD here and there.

Post Re: New server
i pondered one of those, but i need something that will work under vmware esxi 5

i was looking at a highpoint 2720gsl this morning, theres drivers for esxi 4 but i don't know if they'll work for 5.1, so the hunt may be somewhat challenging, especially since most controllers geared to work with esxi are more in the enterprise range

stability is top priority for me though, performance second.

What about the Dell Perc 5i? That's a pretty common one that usually comes highly recommended (and cheap).

i was looking at that one, but it's full height, i need low profile.

I'm looking at the ibm m1015

it's compatible with vmware, and solaris. it can be flashed with the lsi 9240 firmware, as well as the LSI 9211 if you want a passthrough card, so i may be one for my solaris server as well so i can have my raidz2 pool and cache drives on the same controller to free up a mobo port for the optical drive i desperately needed during the initial install, in case i need to boot from the dvd for recovery

i'm pretty much set on the m1015, still reading up to doublecheck, but so far i can find no data against it

the IBM M1015 is on order.

I'll be looking at a pair of 240-256gb SSD's next pay as well as a pair of these to make them fit and an SAS to SATA cable to hook up the drives to the controller. I only wish they'd make SAS to 2 x SATA instead of 4 for applications like this.

I also did something dumb, and got a dual socket 1366 supermicro board on clearance for 250$....I paid 250 for a pair of Xeon 5570's and 16x 4Gb sticks of DDR3 to go with it....

well, this one is up and running, RAID controller installed. no SSD's yet though, so the two VM's are stored on a 250gb hard drive for the moment

here's a screenshot of the vmware console.
