if you're so stuck on Creative soundcards. you should look into their Titanium HD. it's got a more quality audiophile grade component and implementation. although i would still recommend STX as the top choice tho.

better implementation, and it drives up to 600ohm phones. they both use the same op amps (JRC), but STX/ST uses the fiio E9 headphone amp stage. so for headphone listening, you should really go with STX/ST. also the STX/ST is more future proof as well, if you ever want to upgrade to an external tube amp, the DAC of STX/ST RCA output stage has a noise floor of 124 SNR. i might get my hands on a 2nd hand Valhalla Tube amp in a month or so, so i might go that route.

Well I never thought settling on a simple soundcard would be so extension. But of course I tend to go that route with GPUs.
Anyways I picked up the simple recon3d card (one with no shroud) for 69.00 to tide me over until I either decide or just keep it. As much as I like the ACM for convenience I did fimd out that absolutely DOES diminish the sound quality somewhat. However. ..adjusting volume on it is much better than going through the desktop volume control. Its give and take i guess. Im just lazy. Btw...that was the ZX I had.

consider audio equipments will last you so long, that $185 sondcard will actually be a better bang for your buck for the long run than a 680. most audio equipment tend to lasts for decades. i am not saying a soundcard will, but at least you can be sure that it won't be outdated in two years. not to mention because it's DAC quality, you essentially could just use it as a DAC, and run any external equipment from it. just think that you won't have to worry about your music file evolving as much as your games. you won't need a new soundcard every two years.

The Recon3D is arguably much, much worse though, so it's odd that you prefer it.

I don't think anything Bose is suitable for audiophile grade talk though, I'm surprised BAM hasn't shunned you yet.

Yeah the audio gear your telling him to buy doesn't suit his current headphones for sure. Maybe you should make him some headphone recommendations to go along with the STX ;)

That will never happen. I wont be swayed from Sennheiser. ;)
So you will have adjust your persuation tactics accordingly.
And you are right JD. No way a newer card such as the Z would or should be worse. Especially against the recon3d. Which is known t be shit. I just dunno why I had such an issue with the Z series. Maybe it was the HPs...the Bose speakers...or even user issues? Naw that couldnt be. Maybe a bum card. You never know. Im going to pickup another one and give it one more shot.
And what do you have against Bose, Howard?

There's much better choices than Bose and to a lesser extent Sennheiser, that's all I'm sayin'

If you're truly in pursuit of the best sound of course.

I don't follow audiophile forums much really, just what I hear from chatting with Devils00, but he's linked me stuff that far outperforms what you have and doesn't cost THAT much ;)

I'm sure BAM could steer you in the right direction too, or you could hop over to http://www.head-fi.org/ Basically, stuff that you don't find in big-box stores.

i've been telling him countless times... but he's just too scared to upgrade . there're some real nice Audio Technicas that can be had for $99 on amazon, it'll bring clarity to your music. HD280 is nice, but it's lack of better word, on the low end of the scale. Comix just needs to grow some balls and venture out a bit that's all

here... to make your life easier. here're the mid level phones you can try that are light years better than the old HD280 you've been using for god knows how long.

Beyerdynamic: DT770, DT880 600ohm
Audio Technica: ATH AD700 (NOT the A700)
Sennheiser: HD598, HD600
AKG: K701

these are all very popular mid fi phones that are reasonably priced that'll get you to pretty close to the highest end hifi phones without breaking the bank. the AD700 is probably the best bang for the buck among it all, if you don't mind bumping up the 30 and 60hz in eq a bit. the K701 is my least favorite of the list, but if you like your wine bright and cold, that's your cup of phone.

from here on, it's when things start to get expensive fast. and the diminishing return kicks in. from HD700 to HD800, you're only getting a tad bit of reference quality for $500 of price difference. and if you strike big on lottery, you can get the Audese LCD2 and let me know what that sounds like. 8-) but you better have an equally matched DAC/Amp to run with it.

I have a set of 100$ audio technica's in my dj booth, i'd give the brand a vote, mine are lower end, but the way DJ's go through headphones, and the fact I've re-soldered the plug to them 3 times, I wouldn't want to spend too much on them. I like them though, they're comfy for extended periods, and flexible enough that they're not uncomfortable holding only one cup to my ear
