Post Surround headphones
so after serous consideration, i decided to sell my Logitech G930 that i got a year ago. which is barely used. they're barely used because i barely had the time to use them, but now that i do, thanks to the new recent HD 7950 upgrade, i really don't like the way they sound.

if anyone remember my original complain, the so called surround sound effect is just lame and tacky, very unreal, narrow and hardly true surround at all. it's hard to make out the right surround from the right rear surround. not to mention the lack of depth, lack of distance (right now it sounds like someone cramped 7 speakers inside your head and you can't make out which direction the sound is coming from), and lack of fidelity really makes me question the price tag that was spent on this thing ($120).

i've done quite a bit of researching online the past few days. apparently, it sounds like there are two viable option to get the best surround experience out of a pair of headphones for gaming and those are:

1. spend a $150 to get an Astro Mixamp, and then another $180 for pair of Senneiser HD 595.
or
2. Sennheiser PC 333D
or
3. Sennheiser PC 163D

i really don't feel like spending that much money on an external amp + a pair of stereo headphone.

i am leaning more towards giving the Sennheiser PC 333D a try, or option #2.

until farther research, i didn't know it's that hard to get decent surround sound out of pair of headphones, apparently the vast majority of proclaimed "surround headphones" by Cheapotech (also known as logitech), and other tacky peripheral companies all sound unrealistic.

maybe i am just too spoiled by my living room home theater setup, but i really thought decent surround sound should be possible in a pair of headphones.

Post Re: Surround headphones
for reference, this is really what i am looking for.

if you have a pair of regular stereo headphones, put them on, and listen to this demo. if there's a pair of surround headphones out there that can sound 90% like this... i am sold.

How about these? http://www.psykoaudio.com/#axzz1nj8ONfXp

Not sure if they live up to it, but the technology sounds promising.

that does look like a pretty cool technology... however, i just did a quick search .... it doesn't seem to be getting very good reviews.

i am also looking into the Pioneer DIR800C.

i just wish picking surround headphones were easier.

Every review is going to be 100% subjective, that's just how audio is...

I say buy whatever from a store with a decent return policy, or if they have it on display go and try them out.

Exactly. To all of it. Best to first try them on if you can and see if you like the fit. Imo thats first and foremost. Comfort. As well as long term comfort if you have them on for long periods of time. Then see ....or rather hear them. (ahem)...the audience is listening....pun intended. I have been through several brands and came out with sore ear lobes you name it. I finally settled on the sennheiser hd 280s. I also have the 555s and am looking at the 598 and 650. It boils down to personal preference when it comes to sound...style...and fit.

Post Re: Surround headphones
that's the problem.... it's even more subjective than actual home theater IMO. all the reviews i've read, some either love it, others hate it. not like HT system where at least 80% of reviews agree on the same thing. sigh....

i just came home and tried out my old OxygenHD soundcard that has the Dolby Headphone technology, same technology implemented on the G930. and i can't hear the difference between the G930 and the soundcard's dedicated Dolby Headphone DSP. FYI, the G930 comes with its own USB sound processor that does the processing of Dolby Headphone and then sends it to the headphone.

am i just expecting too much? or should i try out another new set of headphones. maybe i should lower my expectations and tell myself that this is probably about as good as it gets for surround sound in headphones.

the more and more i search.. it seems like SONY's new DS6500 is getting a better overall review across the net. i do like it that it uses the optical toslink connection for input, which means it's able to receive multi channel audio natively, as oppose to the two Sennheiser 333D and 163D that essentially receive two analogue channels.
