Post Thinking about going from HDD's to SSD's...
I've been noticing more and more talks of SSD's nowadays, so I'm thinking about taking the plunge. I'm thinking about going with Kingston since I may be able to get some discounts through my contacts...do you guys recommend a specific series and/or have some advice/suggestions? Is it best to have a single SSD or dual via RAID0?

Lots of positive feedbacks on newegg.com for SSD's...something along the line of "you'll never go back to HDD!!"... I mean, if it's that good, I must be missing out BIG TIME!

Me and JD both have OCZ Vertex 2s (60 and 120gb versions respectively). When it comes to installing windows or anything similar is it much quicker than normal 7.2k drives. Also since theyre response time is ultra low, applications also open up quicker. I would say go for anything with Sandforce controllers.

Agree totally.

And avoid RAID as you loose TRIM functionality. A single SSD is more than fast enough anyways.

I heard from other forums that TRIM is still supported in RAID 0.

Check out this old article: http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardware/2 ... for-raid/1

I'd go for a single SSD, but I need extra space...I'm thinking (2x) 120GB SSD would suffice...

It was later proven to be incorrect. It means TRIM works when the controller is set to RAID mode, but not when SSDs are in RAID.

Post Re: Thinking about going from HDD's to SSD's...
Okay, so I've been so busy with "life" that I have yet to get a chance to migrate to SSD platform. Before I even select an SSD for consideration, I'd like to ask the community how I can go about with the entire transition process. Here's the thing, when I first built my comp, I had purchased the full Vista Ultimate Builder's Edition and subsequently upgraded to Win 7 Pro. Based on my current HDD setup, how can I go about transitioning to an SSD w/o losing everything and maintaining the RAID 0 setup? When I install the OS on the SSD, will I have to follow the old route by installing vista first then win7? Sorry for being a super newbie... :/

You can try some of these: http://www.mydigitallife.info/clean-ins ... ard-drive/

And just delete the Windows folder (and whatever else) off the RAID0 once you get the SSD up and running.

Thanks! I'll try this once I figure out which SSD to get. What's a good size, 250gb?

Win7 has native support for SSDs and properly aligns the drive and such. There are quite a few manually tweaks for XP and Vista. When you do an upgrade from Vista, I'm not sure what the implications are as far as SSD performance.

Depends what you plan to use it for...

I have a 120GB and only use about 50%. I keep all my games on the RAID0 HDD array, since game load times don't seem to show as much gain.

I just purchased the SAMSUNG 470 Series MZ-5PA128Z 2.5" 128GB SATA II Internal Solid State Drive for $150 on the 'Egg and free shipping. It's a SATA II drive but I believe your ASUS P6TDeluxe is SATA II only? right? This SSD may very well replace my two 150GB Raptors in RAID 0 ...

Hmm, better/worse than the one that came with the Samsung QX412?

I would say go for anything with Sandforce controllers.
