Post this is why Samsung sold their HDD business to Seagate
this is my second failed Samsung drive now. i have about 7 samsung Spinpoint HDDs for the past 4 years, anywhere from desktop 3.5HDD to 2.5HDD. over the weekend i discovered my 2.5" laptop drive became a ticking time bomb and started to fail. luckily i had enough time to backup the stuff. the pain is just reinstalling since i run bootcamp on my Macbook pro. restoring OSX last time with OSX's internal TimeMachine went ok, a few rough bumps, but i was able to get all my OSX back. but i will have to reinstall Windows fresh, since windows' image restore program automatically reformats the disk, i can't afford having it format my OSX drive that i just restored.

anywho... just wanna share the pain of having to deal with a failed drive. it's always not a fun thing to deal with.

good news is, well depends on how you look at it, i got a hybrid drive Seagate Momentus XT. it comes with a hybrid 8GB SSD attached to it. it does make booting up VERY fast, other than that it's just a fast mechanical HDD.

now the fun begins installing all my windows7.

sucks to hear about the failure. Funny thing is, I always enjoyed doing full windows re-installation. I can see the frustration with bootcamp though. My Samsung HD103SJ 1TB is still rocking hard after so many years of use. Can't say the same about the vertex plus ssd I bought last year. Laptop seems to be chkdsk constantly. No bueno for sure. I can feel a RMA coming soon.

yeah i think Samsung's QC have slid over the years. for the past 6 years, like i said i've own about 8 total Samsung drives. and funny thing is, the oldest ones are rocking the strongest. those T1 500GB drives i got back in 2006, three of them, are like rocks. it's easy to see that Samsung have diverted their attention to SDD, and explains why they sliped the QC and sold the business to an already notoriously unreliable Seagate.

i feel like everytime i buy Seagate is like Russian Roulette. some of them will fail so miserable, while few will be very rock solid.

btw this Hybrid SSD is starting to impress me. boot time is now instant, so is shut down. apps launch a lot faster. this makes me really wanna go full SSD. my next upgrade might just be replacing my living room HTPC HDD with a 256 Crucial. that poor rig has to deal with daily beating and HDD thrashing.

Agreed. Sooner or later I'll need more storage. I'm looking at either the WD black or blue edition.

SSD are the future, there no doubt about that. I upgraded my brothers am2 platform with 4GB or ram and a crucial M4 and the results were astonishing. Access times drastically improved.

Stuff just doesn't last as long as it used to. Simple as that. Companies are all focused on the bottom line.

every time I venture away from WD, i end up with issues like this. I've stayed away from samsung hard drives since the first samsung 13gb drive i had back in the day, it was a pos and I never went back.

fujitsu are the worst though

and seagate, I stay away from them too, i've had a couple of theirs fail me in the last couple years. hence, WD, the only WD drives i've had fail so far are a 15gb from years ago that finally took a dump and I didn't care because it was so many years old and its only 15gb
