Post Some overclocking incentives?
Who's in favor of having some friendly overclocking competitions? I would like to hear from you guys if that would be something we could entertain. I'm sure that if we were to offer some sort of recognition or something in that order, like a badge that can be part of your signature or avatar or heading or something like that. Something that shows a certain rank or whatever. After some time, I might even offer some ole dusty pieces of hardware. I'll send it to the winner (provided the winner sends me money for postage!!) after the competition is over. We need to come up with some easy rules and in particular, the type of posts that show what is being done. I.E. ... a screen shot of CPU-Z, with make of motherboard, memory, CPU settings, and a Super-Pi screen shot with at least a 1MB calculation, and anything else that helps show a good overclock. 3DMark06, 3DVantage, etc ... those kinds of things.

Who's up for it? I know I am.

AK

Follow HWBot rules if you're going to this. Namely, no PhysX!

They can be found here: http://hwbot.org/article/guides/rules; Section 2.2.

But do we need ALL of the specific verification benchmarks? I am sure we can agree on a specific set so not to bog down the process. I like the idea of using HWBot rules as a template. Anyone else want to chime in?

I for one wouldn't mind seeing the standard of these benchmarks being used for validation, along with the sample screenshots that HWBot provided:

3DMark03
3DMark06
3DMark Vantage- Performance
CPU-Z
SuperPi- the Xtreme Systems Mod

and any other ones that are of value for overclocking. Remember, this is just among us in the forums, as I don't suspect there will be many overclocking achievers in the short run. However, once there becomes a larger interest in the forums, I'm sure there will be more competition among everyone who wants to overclock.

I am open to all ideas and suggestions. This is, after all, youse guys forums!!

well duh, it's not my fault NVidia designed their cards that way. How am I to compete if I have to disable something on my video card? I aint playin'. :crying-yellow:

JD, you are just skeered you are gonna lose.

Quote:
Forbidden Hardware:

* software ramdisk (iRam is allowed)

Forbidden Tweaks:

* PhysX drivers
* mipmap tweaking
* any software or human interaction altering the perceived speed of the benchmark program, tricking it to believe it ran faster
* wireframe hacks: any software or driver causing a benchmark program not (properly) render the textures
* rendered image differs too much from the original due to other software tweaking

And I really hope you're just joking now Steve. It's rather obvious why PhysX is banned in benchmark competitions/comparisons.

Could also throw in Unigine Heaven. Maybe also AvP DX11 Benchmark too (I believe they released this?).

hmmmm I had no idea NVidia designed cards with so much forbidden capabilities.

Ok, I'll ditch the 480 and go buy 2x 5970's. Would that be ok?

And I guess you couldn't call it kidding, just whining. I want some free HW.

JD ... if you want to, please line out what you would like as far as the standard benchmarks that should be used for validating a good overclock. We need to agree on what's acceptable and what's not. We could then vote on it and them implement them fairly soon.

Well mainly what I quoted from HWBot. Basically no form of software tweaking/hacking/cheating. I'd say using the default driver settings should alleviate most of this. I know with the ATI control panel is pretty easy to reset to defaults and to have profiles of all your settings. I'd assume NVIDIA is the same way.

Like I keep saying, PhysX is the main thing which super inflates scores making it impossible to compare with all of us ATI users. If we want, we can have another section for PhysX, but the main one should be without.

I'm guessing I'm coming off a bit mean/rude/bossy, but I tend to do that in written formats. Really just trying to keep things fair, though we aren't going to be competition-grade, still there shouldn't be any cheating. As such, I think the screenshot requirements can be more lax and not require an ORB/CPU-Z Validation link.

I know what you were saying JD. ;) Since NVidia does implement PhysX on their new cards and yes, it does make for some high scores it's hard to really get a "true" competative score between them and ATI cards. I'm assuming PhysX was strictly aimed towards a new experience in gaming and future gaming and not benchmarks, except to only "inflate" the numbers. As I have noticed, disabling it does drop my scores.
I suppose we could have a seperate section for NVidia but I think only myself and dtech use NVidia. Maybe someone else I forget? It's no biggie, I can sit this one out and have fun watching you guys.
Dam you NVidia. :snooty:
At the same time, I still have the urge to get at least one 5970. I been wanting one for a while, hoping ATI would release something new and drop the prices on those monstrosities.

Disabling PhysX doesn't mean that you can't match/beaet ATI...

GTX480 should still out perform the HD5870, or at least be extremely close which will make this all the more interesting.

Been there, done that. Comixion couldn't keep up.

Yes, but you also need to take cost into consideration. If cost didn't matter, we'd all be sporting supercomputers with a weekly delivery of liquid hydrogen.

Uh ... ^^^ Nova, I think that would be liquid NITROGEN ... not hydrogen ... that could make for one big boom if ya did ...

someone donate a videocard and ill compete. i'm pretty sure my 8800gts won't keep up....unless we had some more cpu bound benchmarks, then i might be okay-ish....

just thuoght of something. maybe with the variations of hardware we all have. maybe before we compare each others scores, we should also calculate performance increases, give some of us with older hardware a little bit of a better run maybe?

Fair enough, but what do we do about architecture differences? Just because AMD may do poorly in say SuperPi, doesn't make it total shit. I guess it would have to be a close relative to compare, say Phenom II X2 vs X4 vs X6. Similarly, Core 2 Duo vs Quad.

Still be hard to get a true sense since we'd have different motherboards (chipsets) and such.
