Post Corsair H80
I'm considering upgrading my stock cooler for the i7 920 to Corsair's newly released H80 cooler. Has anyone had any experience with it yet? Perhaps some experience with its predecessors? Anyway, I feel that with the new cooler, I could o/c the 920 to 3.2 - 3.4gzh easily. Oh, and if you have experience, will it require the removal of the motherboard? Thanks in advance!

It seems the H60 performs very similar to the H80 and costs quite a bit less...

And if your case doesn't have a cut-out for the CPU, then you'll likely need to pull your motherboard.

Yikes...taking out the mobo will be a pain. Do you think it's worth going from 3.0ghz with current stock h/s to 3.4ghz via H80? If the .4gzh is worth the hassle and $92. I'll order it now, so I can get it by friday.

Only 3.4GHz? Do you have a D0 i7 920? If so, 4GHz should be no issue. I run mine at 4.2GHz for the past year or so now.

I don't believe I have a D0 i7 920. How can I find out? CPU-Z?

YIKES! I just checked my processor temperature and it's idling at around 75 average! Right now, I have it o/c'd to 3.0gzh only on stock cooling... Okay, time to order that H80!

WOW! That's pretty damn hot for idle, can't imagine what load must be...

And yes, CPU-Z would tell you. Look for "Revision".

Even if it's not D0, you should be able to get closer to 3.8GHz.

It's C0/C1. I already ordered the H80 via Amazon. Had it shipped via 2-day air, so I should have it by tomorrow according to UPS. As for o/cing to 3.8ghz, would I be doing this without changing the voltage? I'm newb when it comes to o/cing...

I did some further research and think I've found the cause of the higher than average temperature: Hyper-Threading. Did you get 4.2ghz with HT on or off? Mine (I believe) is on. I'll have to verify this when i get home tonight.

Hmmm...your 4.2ghz o/c is making me reconsider the 3.4 push. I think I'll go for a 3.8 or my favorite GPA, 4.0! haha!

Well I have a D0, so 4.2GHz isn't an issue. And yes, I run it with HT enabled. My load temps are around 75C, idle 45-50C.

The C0 has a rough time hitting 4GHz+ though, I know 3.8GHz is a more typical OC on C0s though.

There's a TON of guides for the P6T Deluxe, so it should be child's play to overclock your 920. You'll quite likely have to tinker with some of the voltages though.

What do you think the typical max would be w/o messing with voltages, 3.4ghz? I honestly would like to stay clear of voltage tweaking because I'm not really an enthusiast... :/

I keep checking UPS for the most up-to-date transit progress....

I guess I failed to post an update. I got the H80 installed and now I have my i7 920 running cool at 3.2ghz with the lowest fan setting. It idles in the low 40's and at load, somewhere between high 40's to low 50's. It was the same for 3.4ghz, but i just want to play it safe. ;)

Is there an easy way to upload photos/videos on this site? I took a few photos and videos with my iPhone 4 during the installation process. I might have to wait 'til later though...since I'm at work and my company placed restricted access to the net. :/

You can use the "Upload attachment" while posting. It *should* work ;)

Based on the photos, do you guys think having a sound card installed in the PCI-E slot is a problem for the gpu?

It would probably be better in one of the lower slots, but I don't think it'll do any harm where it is. Just that the sound card is going to get pretty warm from all the heat coming off the GPU.

The card is the PCI-E version, so there's only one slot for it, unfortunately. Anyway, can't wait for my next build sometime next year...going to get modular PSU, so I can make it look extra clean.

Umm you have 2 perfectly fine PCIe slots at the bottom of your board...

I have my Auzentech Bravura in the bottom slot.
