Post Awww crap!! LGA2011 Ivy Bridge may be delayed!!
Just when I was planning on upgrading at the end of the year, I may have to wait another 3~4 months! Now I wonder if I should go with an AMD system instead ...

Intel investment reduction plans may affect PC and semiconductor players
Monica Chen, Taipei; Joseph Tsai, DIGITIMES [Thursday 1 September 2011]

Intel, facing weak PC performance, reportedly is considering to temporarily halt its plans to upgrade to a 22nm process at Fab 24, and has decided to delay the launch of its next-generation Ivy Bridge platform by a quarter to save costs. However, sources from PC players believe such plans may impact the company's PC partners as well as some semiconductor equipment players in the short term.

Intel has recently decided to delay its Ivy Bridge platform launch from the end of 2011 to March 2012, while notebook models with the new platform will start appearing in the channel in April to allow a smooth transition between the existing Sandy Bridge platform and the new platform.

Since Intel internally has evaluated that PC demand for the upcoming year may not be as strong as before, the company has recently adjusted its investment schedule for semiconductor equipment. In early 2011, Intel had planned a budget of US$500 million to upgrade Fab 24. Although the investment amount has not yet been changed, Intel reportedly is considering halting the plans and may reduce related capex.

It's not about the speed of the processor as it's what the newer platform brings with it. Faster bandwidth and newer features is what Ivy Bridge was going to bring to the table. For instance, the supposed X79 chipset alone were to bring at least 4-6 native 6GB/s SATA ports along with USB 3.0 support, and even possibly PCI-E 3.0. And the 22nm processor by itself was to run cooler and use less power (also was going to be able use existing LGA1366 cooling solutions).. But then again, with the delay in the platform, some of the semiconductor players (see above quoted article) will now have more time to decide if they can improve some things or just bail out all together.

Oh why Intel, oh why? :angry-fire:

I knew this was going to happen.

Intel is launching their Ultra Book platform later this month and they need to unload a ton of Sandy Bridge chips still.

Plus with the economy seemingly tanking yet again, who knows what the future holds.

With more and more of the news I've read regarding this unfortunate announcement (at least for hard-core PC enthusiasts) Intel is almost, but not quite saying that the PC platform is a dying breed. It does definitely smell like the trend is towards more mobility and cloud computing.

Who needs a big ole, bulky box when you can have a nice shiny, slim tablet, huh? :snooty:

Pretty much...

There's really no money in desktop computers, the margins are so slim it's stupid. They make their money in Enterprise stuff and mobile computing platforms, be it laptops, netbooks, or tablets. Margins are much higher there I'd say since it's not typically serviceable by anybody with a screw driver ;)

Ivy Bridge is the replacement to the current mid range processors (up to i7 2600k - LGA1155). The replacement for the LGA1366 platform has been refered to as Sandy Bridge - E. That platform will pop up by November with quad channel DDR3, quad/hex cores, and hopefully PCIe3 integrated into the CPU core. Rumor has it the PCIe3 controller is responsible for current delays and may get canned. Either way I'm looking forward to this new chip to see what kind of architectural improvements it holds.

is Sandy Bridge-E 3D transistor gate based like the Ivy Bridge? because that's the main advantage i like about the Ivy.

Yes...3D transistors are built into Intel's 22nm process.
